About
Studio Archive is a workshop studio founded in 2020 by Daniel Cairns in Toronto, ON. With an approach informed by a desire to create considered and enduring works to be enjoyed for years to come, execution of this philosophy hones ideas back to their most necessary elements. The result reveals objects punctuated with simple geometry, crisp proportions and informed by design history - past, present, and future.
Focus is placed on the process. Every facet of a project is examined - from initial planning and design, through build, and installation. Traditional hand tools are enjoyed, but used only when required. Modern techniques and machines are employed with equal excitement.
Material plays a key role at Studio Archive, emphasizing traditional North American hardwoods such as white oak, ash, and walnut- all domestically sourced. Softwoods and exotic species are also utilized when suited. Stones, metals and textiles lend added interest.
Archive believes that wood is an important material in the fight against climate change. In addition to being a strong, light weight and renewable building material, wood also acts as an excellent medium for carbon sequestration.
When designed and built thoughtfully, each piece places nature first.
